SURPRISE!

A Surprise for Mrs. Shannon!

Thank you so much to the whole class and all of the parents who helped to put together a little surprise shower for our own Mrs. Shannon! It was great to have her back for a few minutes and spend some time celebrating. I know she had a blast and the students sure did enjoy seeing her . . . and eating cupcakes, of course.

It has been a great week in 1st grade as we have started our study of forests and trees. We've learned about short i and the ending x. We've also talked about the difference in realistic fiction and fantasy. Next week, we will continue to study about forests and learn about the people who take care of them. Our first at home project will be sent home on Monday. It will be due on Friday, September 11th. Please let me know if you have any questions after getting the directions. We will practice short o in our spelling list next week.

Great job studying your sight words and/or math facts this week. Be on the lookout in next week's homework for a new list for many of you! This Friday will also be our first house competition, so be prepared to dress in team shirts. For our new students, shirts will arrive early in the week, so keep an eye out for them in book bags!

Finally, thank you for making this transition so easy! You have fantastic students and I am so excited to have the time to work with them. Please keep in touch and let me know if there is anything I can do for you. Enjoy the weekend!

SUPER hero first graders!

Our super first graders did an AWESOME job this week! We started our reading, math, and spelling curriculum . They ALL did a fabulous job on their first spelling test! Way to go! This week our spelling words have the "short i" sound in them. We also have some challenge words this week! These challenge words won't count against your child on the test. This week you will notice that your child will be assigned a specific sight word or math facts list to study. We will test these sight words or math facts on Friday.  Please remember that if you feel like your child is ready to test on more than one sight word list to please let us know. This week we will also begin our social studies and science unit about forests. The kids are excited!

On a different note... I am starting my maternity leave tomorrow (a little sooner than I thought!)  Your children are in EXCELLENT hands with Mrs. Emily and Mrs. Michelle. Mrs. Emily's email is ebrown@sges.org if you need anything. Thank you all for a great start to first grade! Have a great week!
Big hugs,
Mrs. Shannon

Don't we have the cutest first grade super heroes????

Math game pictures and information :)

Hi everyone! Thank you to those that were able to attend curriculum night last night. After looking over the information if you have any questions, please let us know. Don't forget that this Friday will be our first spelling test. Next Friday we will start testing sight words/math facts as well. We played penny dice today during math. Make sure to ask your child about the different math games we have played so far.  Don't forget the "All about Me" capes are due this Friday. We are excited to see each child's cape! Please make sure your child brings their binder to school each day and that you check it each night. Have a great rest of the week!

Weekly reminders

Hi everyone! It is going to be a great week in first grade! We are starting our reading, math, and handwriting curriculum this week. This week we will be teaching the children the routines of these different programs. You will notice in your child's folder this week that this week we will begin our spelling words. We will have our first spelling test on Friday. I will pass out student binders on Tuesday at curriculum night. These binders will go home each night and come back to school the next day. (Don't forget curriculum night is Tuesday at 6:00). Tuesday is also picture day and the students need to wear their dress uniforms please. As always, if you have any questions, please email me at sdoughtie@sges.org

Just fyi....
I plan to be with our sweet first graders until the beginning of September. Mrs. Emily will then take over while I am on maternity leave :) She is FABULOUS and the kids love her! Her email is ebrown@sges.org

First week pictures

On the first day of school we went on a fun tour around our school. When we got back to our classroom we had some "jitter juice" to calm any first day jitters! One sweet first grader told me that after drinking their jitter juice they don't feel nervous about school anymore :) I have also included some cute pictures of our kiddos reading this week. I can't wait to watch them grow this year with their reading skills! First grade is such a fun year to watch these children grow!

First day smiling faces

Check out these sweet first grade faces on the first day of school! Everyone came in so excited and ready to be in first grade! We had an awesome first day :)
